Your data

The information we collect about you depends on the nature of your business with us. We will use the information you supply us with to progress any departmental business. We may check the information:

to see how it compares with information already held by us

We can also get information about you from certain third parties, or give information to them to check accuracy of information. This is done to:

  • prevent or detect crime
  • protect public funds in other ways as permitted by the law

We will not disclose information about you to anyone outside the Department for Work and Pensions unless the law permits us or unless you have given us your explicit consent.

Our website does not enable our visitors to communicate with other visitors or for them to post information to be accessed by others. The Department for Work and Pensions is the Data Controller for the purpose of the Data Protection Act. The Pension Service is part of the Department for Work and Pensions. The Department was formed on 8 June 2001 from parts of the former Department of Social Security, and parts of the former Department for Education and Employment.

Email policy

The Department for Work and Pensions email facilities are a way of making general enquiries. The Department regrets that it cannot enter into long exchanges with individuals by email as this is not a secure way of sending personal information.

However, if you contact us by email and we cannot reply in the same way, we will reply by other means like the telephone or by post.
